The colossus at Rhodes has little proof of existence but it is believed to be a giant statue of the titan god Helios. Rhodes is where the giant statue had been depicted to stand over the port of Rhodes. but that is not true it just stood next to/in the port. It was believed to fall over in an earthquake. This giant of a statue was built to commemorate freedom. They chose their favorite god Helios for the statue because they worshiped him. I chose this topic because I just think the giant statue on the east side of the Mandraki harbor. I just call it the port of Rhodes because Rhodes had a very strong exporting economy and had a huge harbor. A few things that interest about this topic is it's history it was built to celebrate victory when fighting against Demetrios Poliorketes, Alexander the greats successor. He had built a marvelous siege tower that was practically invincible for the time. He had an army of 40000 people. That is more than the entire city of Rhodes(the capital had the same name as the island) but the Rhodesians won and they built a statue of all the bronze from the left over by Demetrios. For years it was said that they built the colossus out of the siege tower but that is physically impossible to is you want it to look okay. The Colossus was designed by Chares of Lindos a very famous bronze worker and to me he could be the best in the world after he made The Colossus. This marvel would put him in first above his master who held the number one seed. Also the terrible fate of it falling down 50 years later is interesting but the most interesting thing about is how such a marvel could be built with limited technology and time. | A few questions for you to answer. 1) How do historians think the colossus was created? 2)Where are the possible locations for the colossus and what is the evidence? 3)How has this mystical statue effect history today? |
